The Scumbler is my weekly culture newsletter, where I publish interviews with people doing compelling creative work, personal essays and recommendations, and cartoons. Subscribing is a great idea for you.

Free subscribers can expect to receive two public posts per month. For $5/month or $55/year, paid subscribers will get an additional two posts every month, plus access to the full paid archive.

Past Scumbler interviewees include Patrick McHale (creator of Over the Garden Wall), Eric Moorer (D.C. natural wine expert), Bianca Roses (Survivor 48 contestant), Mona Kowalska (fine artist and cult fashion favorite), Will McPhail (New Yorker cartoonist), Junia Lin (Laufey’s creative director), and Tom Broecker (a veteran Saturday Night Live costume designer). And more.

Why is it called The Scumbler? Scumbling is a painting technique that involves dabbing a dry brush in paint and lightly dragging it across a canvas, creating a patchy, transparent effect. That’s the goal of the newsletter: to have fun glancing off all kinds of interesting topics. Plus, the word “scumble” makes me laugh.

Subscribe to The Scumbler, and if you like it, tell a friend about it. What’s the worst that could happen? Social exile and a lifetime of regret?
